I looked at the other questions asked about this but didn't really find anything I could use.

Is there any way to get a customized @diku.dk mail and if so, exactly how does one do it?

Any student at DIKU already has a @diku.dk address.

In general, if you can log in to DIKU's servers with username <user>, then you have the email address <user>@diku.dk.

What username you have varies a bit depending on where you started.

  • In olden days, it was possible to create a sandbox user. For those, you could freely decide your username.
  • The system them changed to generating a user for you when you started, with username based on your real name: Alice Burnton would get the address aburnton@diku.dk.
  • This only lasted a year or two, and the usernames used were then switched to being the KU usernames. (i.e. an address like hdz467@diku.dk) This is the system currently used.

(This is my recollection of the progression, if there's a mistake, feel free to let me know.)

I don't believe there's any way of getting a nicer @diku.dk mail address than that, sadly. You could try contacting Science-IT and asking.

The easiest way access the mail sent to your @diku.dk mail address, is to set up email forwarding.

You do this by logging in on DIKU's servers using SSH (brok.diku.dk, for instance), using your username. (If you're unsure, try your KU username) Once you're logged in, put your email address into your .forward-file. This can be accomplished like so:

echo "your.email@example.com" > ~/.forward

Once this has been done, all email will be forwarded to the address you specified.

It appears it is now, by default, redirected to your @alumni.ku.dk e-mail address. Then all you need to do is set up forwarding for that e-mail, and @diku will also automatically be redirected.

To write from it you can do something like ssh'ing into fx. ask.diku, and then do

echo "Some_body_text_here" | mail -s "Some_subject_here" -a "From: your_address_here@diku.dk" destination_address_here@destination_domain.dk

In this way you could also impersonate people, though I do not recommend this as that's not very nice.
